The only reason that the Mage’s Guild has been able to achieve the rank of 4 is because of the fear and respect that Mages command within the city. Over the last several years their authority has been erroded by the recognition of the Slaver Mages. When the city counsel voted to allow the Slaver’s to have their own casters separate from the Mages Guild a lot of power was lost. As a result, a barely controlled state of hostility exists between the two guilds. The most prominent argument used is that the Slaver’s do not restrict what kind of research their Mages are allowed to conduct. The Mage’s Guild uses this platform to launch numerous attacks on the character of the Slaver’s Guild that have, so far, done little to no damage.
Of course, the Mages guild has placed no restrictions on research. This is merely a conveinent cover story.
Recently there have been whispered tales of purges within the Mages Guild. Students suspected of aspiring to careers within the Slaver’s Guild have been expelled and even a few instructors. It is rumored that the Slaver’s are building their own magical libraries to begin teaching the next generation.
